The Dave Books
Great for the Reluctant Reader
This book was great for catching the interest of my son who is somewhat of a reluctant reader.
[Dave and the Frog]
I liked the book illustrations but....
I was drawn to the beautiful illustrations of this book but there’s an element of the story which sits uncomfortably with me. The boy sees a frog at the pond and he then chases it as he wants it as a pet. Upon capturing it his mother says he can take the frog home but he must take care of it. Despite it eventually being returned to its natural habitat, I disliked the way the boy behaved and how his mother agreed he could take it. We should not be encouraging children that they can remove a creature from its natural habitat based on our own selfish desires. It’s just not something i feel comfortable reading to my daughter. Shame as the book is very beautiful otherwise and i enjoy all of our other TGATB books.
[Dave and the Frog]
Frogs as pets
This book was a good story but a bit less exciting than others from TGTB. It is listed as a 1A but I’d nearly put it in the book bundle C or D. Its pretty easy and overall a great story but less descriptive than a typical level 1 book. The story is about a boy who (although he has a whole farm of animals) wants a frog as a pet. The mother allows him to catch the frog and take care of it but soon the boy realizes a wild animal should stay in the wild and can take care of itself better there. The end moral of the story is great and can resonate with many but the story line leading to the end is a little drawn out and basic

Great book for after the boxes A-D
This was a good transition from the A-D boxes books. Others have been a bit harder, but this cute story was just right.

Love it!
My kindergartener loved this book! The pictures are beautiful and we especially loved how kind Dave was to the frog. Highly recommend!
